They are the glue to our puzzle of a successful day at the salon.

Let me begin by saying that I believe salon assistants are super stars.
Now, to the professionals in the beauty industry who are climbing the ladder of success, I know your struggle. Let it be known that your climb SHOULD never end. We all started with minimum wage, maybe a few tips here and there, cleaning toilets, and cracked hands from endless shampoos, and so on.
Even with all of that not so exciting mumble jumble, I know most of us had that moment where their “hair hero” taught them something they will never forget. For me, it was fixing a pink hot root on a guest who had 100% white and wanted to be a red head!!!! Let me just say, GOLD, GOLD, GOLD is forever my friend!
Whether you started this profession right out out high school or as a second career, it may have meant taking a huge financial cut or, even at times self doubt. It can be tough knowing where YOU stand in a line of many great professionals.
Attitude is a major part of this equation (see previous posts “Profess it Up”)
Here are some tips for the New Stars:
- Surround yourself with people who are better than you, but dont act like it.
- If someone is gossiping and your listening, your involved..go sweep or smile at a guest.
- If at first you dont succeed then you may not the second or tenth time…DONT GIVE UP! Take responsibility and MOVE UP!
- Mentors needed in the following areas: current industry standard hair skills, educational, social media, inspiration. These people will help you develop your brand as a professional.
- Never say NO, especially in the beginning. If you truly can’t do something just say “I can offer you…” or “I’m not available but let me find someone.” I promise it will change everything. Eventually that turns into to “Sure I can stay late for Mrs. Murray”
Make smart choices, follow the leaders, and remember to always be professional.
