It is a privilege to be successful in the beauty industry. We have a responsibility to lead by example. We have the ability lift the spirits and confidence of the peers around us. They look to us for enhanced knowledge, attitude behaviours, and and our standards of excellence.
I beleive that an individuals emotional intelligence plays a huge roll in their level of success. It can propell them forward or hold them back. We can all remember what it was like to be the newbie, or “just an assistant”. I remember clearly the way I felt when I was emotionally smushed to the ground with belittling words.
I also began working in a salon/spa that had 120 employees at one time and there were lots of personalities that gelled well, and some that didn’t. It was interesting however, that the culture throughout the space was clear. If you didn’t love it you didn’t last.
I wanted to shine a light on the Masters of our craft and thank them for showing us the way. With success, often there can be a sense of pride and gratuity and I am a 20 year hair professional who is so proud and I continue to feed my hunger for education and doing what I do just a little better with every canvas.
I would also like to shine a light on the Masters who may have forgotten what it means to be a leader.
Here are some tips for the Seasoned Stars:
- Without help you could never do 3-4 clients in 2 hours.
- had time to build your skills and someone taught you..don’t forget that.
- The guest is yours and your making the money from that so take responsibility if something goes wrong
- Everyone had feeling and we are all sensitive otherwise we wouldn’t be in this business. Some cry, some yell. All sensitive. Care for this.
- If you don’t own the salon, don’t act like you do. Delegate with respect, no entitlement.
- Share your knowledge and passion!
I want to thank all of the professionals who helped shape my career. I have been so blessed to be surrounded by some of the best and well rounded human beings. I also want to thank the ones who missed the mark a bit. I wouldn’t know the difference if I didn’t have the chance to see another way.
We have a duty to nurture the talent joining out teams and encourage their value in our space.
