I was listening to public radio recently and the discussion was the difference between Disney princesses since the beginning of Disney and the new princess/warrior that we see in modern Disney and anime. Is her purpose to be saved by the prince or can she carry her own sword and fight for herself. Is the line completely drawn for women to be strong and powerful?
In the beauty industry we encounter millions of people who share their perspective on the change in the world. Within our world it’s not so much male or female capable, however there is still a pecking order. I feel it is important to acknowledge this reality in our industry and see how we can adjust it.
In my previous blogs I talked about assistants being our Superstars (see Assistants are our Superstars). As peers I think it is important for us to recognize our own superstar qualities. As well as the qualities about each other and how they help us be a good team.
As for now consider your role and how you treat those around you. Do you need people to carry you? Are you waiting to be saved? Are you taking action to meet your version of success? This is a question that I find myself thinking as I meet people from salons. I am a colorist behind the chair five days a week and and a part time Color Educator. How I take action is by raising awareness with my peers who allow me to share my story & knowledge in order to help them grow.
